The banana industry contributes significantly to the Philippine economy. In fact, export earnings from banana production represent 2.3 percent of the total Philippine export revenue.

Also, a lot of Filipinos are dependent on the cultivation of this commodity. More than 40,000 farmers rely on banana for livelihood.

Thus, the Department of Agriculture identified the banana industry as one of its major thrusts considering that there is a large export market for bananas especially in Japan, Hongkong and the Middle East countries.
