#TECHNOTIPS: Organic farming
by Catheryn Villorente - Tuesday, 26 October 2021, 03:04 PM

organic farming Healthy soils are not only key in producing food, fuel, fiber, and medical products, but are also crucial to the many ecosystems. Soils are vital in the carbon cycle, storage, and water filter, as well as in improving resilience to floods and droughts.

As the primary foundation of food, soil plays an important role in the life of every individual.

#TECHNOTIPS: Defrosting of meat and poultry products
by Catheryn Villorente - Monday, 25 October 2021, 09:47 AM

DEFROSTINGWhile meat producers take actions to assure safety of their products before it reaches your kitchen, it is likewise essential to maintain food safety all the way to the table. Practicing safe-handling methods at home can help keep you and your family safe.

During food preparation, frozen meat should not be defrosted at room temperature.

#TECHNOTIPS: Meat safety

meat safetyMaintaining a safe, healthy home requires the practice of proper food handling. Safe-handling methods at home can reduce the risk of foodborne illness and keep your family healthy.

Leftovers are best recommended to be chilled quickly in order to prevent bacteria from growing. For a better chilling process, divide large quantities into smaller portions. Proper air flow in the refrigerator or freezer is necessary to maintain suggested temperature.

Proper safe-handling does not only bring healthy food consumption for your family but also does help in reduction of food waste. (Meat Safety.org)

#TECHNOTIPS: Ground beef
by Catheryn Villorente - Thursday, 21 October 2021, 10:49 AM

ground beefGround beef should be handled with particular care as it is more perishable than whole muscle cuts of meat. The presence of any bacteria on the surface during the grinding process will affect the quality of the product.

Since freezing ground beef at 0°F (-18°C) keeps it safe indefinitely, freezing time and packaging are recommended to keep its good quality. Storing it in the fridge for 1 to 2 days or in the freezer for 3 to 4 months are some options.

Meanwhile, here are some things to consider when shopping for ground beef:

• Fresh ground beef goes through a number of color changes during its shelf life. These color changes are normal, and the ground beef remains perfectly wholesome and safe to eat within 1-2 days of purchase from the market.

• Look for ground beef with bright red color. Ground beef can turn brown in the absence of oxygen. While this is not necessarily a sign of spoilage, extended exposure to air reduces the normal shelf life of the product.

#TECHNOTIPS: Plant-based ingredients
by Catheryn Villorente - Thursday, 14 October 2021, 11:15 AM

plant-based ingredients The plant-based industry has grown immensely over the past few years, making it readily available nationwide. With plant-based meat having lower calories and saturated fat while higher in fiber, enjoying a guilt-free burger at your favorite restaurant is not a problem anymore. It is created and manufactured to appear, feel, and taste like conventional meat from animal products.
Being highly processed, this option is far from perfect but when eaten in moderation with other source of vegetable-based protein -- chickpeas, lentils, tofu and quinoa -- this can be a healthy diet choice.
Plant-based meat is a very much healthier option to both environment and human health. Changing to vegetarian option while decreasing animal product consumption would bring a great effect to emissions and prevention of water scarcity. (Insider Intelligence)
