#TECHNOTIPS: Cassava
by Yovina-Claire Pauig - Thursday, 18 August 2022, 04:20 PM

CassavaThe versatility and utility of cassava make it promising as human food, animal feed, alcohol, medicine, etc. Some feed millers in the country use cassava as part of their formulation, replacing about 30%-50% of the corn in the feed ration. In Thailand, the millers use cassava leaves, stems, and roots. These are processed into pelleted meals and are being exported into European countries.

Cassava is also used for industrial products like textile, binders, and as plain raw material in making biodegradable items. (Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development)

#TECHNOTIPS: Milk Shelf Life
by Yovina-Claire Pauig - Thursday, 11 August 2022, 03:25 PM

Milk shelf lifeShelf life is the period of time that a food or perishable goods may be stored before it starts to deteriorate or become potentially unsafe. Controlling the temperature during storage is specifically important for most foods especially dairy products- from market to home.

For dairy-based food, almost all products need to be stored in the refrigerator. Dairy products like ice cream, shall be stored in the freezer.

The shelf life of various dairy products varies significantly. Specifically, these are the following:

Pasteurized milk and flavored milk drink: 5-7 days. However, UHT-treated milk, unopened, can last up to 6-12 months at ambient temperature.

Yoghurt: 7-14 days

Hard and semi-hard cheese: Depending on the type, it should be kept inside the refrigerator and can last for several weeks to months.

Cottage cheese, ricotta and cream cheese: 1-2 weeks

Butter (salted and unsalted): A shelf-life of about 4 weeks.

UHT milk, ice cream and frozen yoghurt: 6-12 months in the freezer.

While the above information is the standard shelf-life of dairy products, it is highly-recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions indicated on the label. Always check the use-by and expiration date to know how long products can be safely consumed.

Meanwhile, the best-before date is the time that a properly stored, unopened package will retain its quality, freshness, taste, and nutritional value.

#TECHNOTIPS: Milk for Kids
by Yovina-Claire Pauig - Thursday, 11 August 2022, 08:49 AM

#TECHNOTIPS: Milk Quality
by Yovina-Claire Pauig - Monday, 8 August 2022, 02:44 PM

(National Dairy Authority)

#TECHNOTIPS: Banana Stems
by Yovina-Claire Pauig - Friday, 5 August 2022, 11:27 AM

Banana StemsThe banana stem also has its share of benefits. It is packed with fiber that helps in weight loss, constipation cure, and detoxification. It is also rich in potassium and vitamin B6, which help prevent kidney stones and urinary tract infections (UTI) and aid in blood pressure regulation. [Biotransformation of banana pseudostem extract into a functional juice containing value-added biomolecules of potential health benefits. (2017)]
