PomeloPomelo fruits will be ready for harvesting 5-6 months (166-173 days) from flower opening. During ripening, the fruit's dull skin becomes noticeably bright as its oil glands are now prominent and shiny.

Unlike other fruits, pomelo does not need a chemical flower inducer to bear an off-season harvest. Its fruits also have longer shelf life. They can be kept for over a month under ambient temperature, and up to 6 months under cold storage. (DA-Bureau of Plant Industry)

LanzonesIn for a fruit dessert? Lanzones is a Filipino-favorite tropic fruit. You can never go wrong with its sweet to sub-acid taste. It originated from the Malay Peninsula and was first introduced in the Philippines during the prehistoric times.

Lanzones is a cauliflorous plant with round or oval-shaped fruits borne in compact bunches. It is characterized with thin, leathery, green skin that turns brownish yellow as it ripens. It also produces abundant milky juice when the fruit is not fully ripe.

With its versatility, the tree can be grown in different types of soil and with humid environment but grows well in sandy loam and clay loam soil and sensitive to low temperatures. Stimulating its growth needs plenty of water after a couple of dry months.

Lanzones seeds are polyembyonic that may contain 2-3 seedlings per seed. Propagation with seeds is commonly used in most farms in the country. This procedure may take a while, it will take up to 15 years to start bearing fruit. While propagation with cleft grafting may take up to 8 years to bear flower. (Bureau of Plant Industry)

CassavaThe versatility and utility of cassava make it promising as human food, animal feed, alcohol, medicine, etc. Some feed millers in the country use cassava as part of their formulation, replacing about 30%-50% of the corn in the feed ration. In Thailand, the millers use cassava leaves, stems, and roots. These are processed into pelleted meals and are being exported into European countries.

Cassava is also used for industrial products like textile, binders, and as plain raw material in making biodegradable items. (Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development)
