ILOILO CITY, May 26 – The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Unit 6 (DA-RFU 6) here will be distributing about P1.8 million worth of vegetable seeds to farmers in Western Visayas.

DA Regional Technical Director Remelyn Recoter said that seeds will be distributed to the farmers as soon as they arrive from the DA Central Office, which is expected first week of June.

All seeds will have to be distributed by July, she added.

The vegetable seeds include ampalaya, string beans, eggplants, pole sitao and squash, among others. They are packed in cans and sachets and ready for delivery to target farmer-beneficiaries all over the region.

Director Recoter said that this is the second batch of vegetable seeds slated for distribution this year. The first batch worth P2 million of vegetable seeds was already distributed last March and April.

The DA said that these vegetable seeds are just in time for the rainy season and for farmers who are contemplating a shift into vegetable production as an alternative to rice and corn products.

In an interview, DA Regional Director Larry P. Nacionales said that they are urging farmers to plant more vegetables using organic fertilizers and DA-accredited technology to optimize plant growth. He also wanted the farmers to practice alternate cropping and not just use their farmlands exclusively for rice. (PNA) LAP/LPCarnaje
