#TECHNOTIPS: Protecting our Forests | |
The role of forests in our daily lives cannot be underestimated. From the air we breathe to the resources we use, forests provide us almost everything we need to survive.
However, deforestation continues to occur on the planet for reasons that vary from region to region. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the Philippines is one of the most deforested countries in the world. It is estimated to have declined from 12 million hectares in 1960 to a current level of about 5.7 million hectares.
Protecting our forests is the best chance we have to conserve wildlife, solve climate emergency, and protect our well-being. It is our mutual responsibility to end deforestation and forest degradation.
One of the most straightforward strategies is to plant a tree. Trees hold soil in place, sequester carbon dioxide, and produce oxygen. They provide habitat for wildlife and serves as a foundation to many ecosystems on Earth.
Another action we can also do is to spread awareness and raise consciousness. By educating others on the consequences of deforestation, we can highlight how our role as consumers can make a difference.
As we celebrate Earth Day, stand up and get involved because together, we have the power to restore our Earth. Find out more about this year’s theme for Earth Day at https://www.earthday.org/. (Food and Agriculture Organization; Greentumble)
