#TECHNOTIPS: Timely harvesting of corn
by Catheryn Villorente - Friday, 21 May 2021, 11:20 AM

CORN HARVESTCorn ears are ready for harvest usually when the leaves of the husk start to dry. At this time, corn grains are already hard and well-glazed.
For open-pollinated variety, select 150 - 200 ears for seed purposes before harvesting, using the following criteria:

• from plants with the same ear height
• big, uniform ears
• free from pests and diseases
• ears with the same distinct color after husking

Timely harvesting is recommended to:
• reduce the risk due to adverse weather conditions,
• minimize severe postharvest losses,
• prevent further development of ear fungi, and
• minimize insect and rat damages.
