malabar spinachMalabar spinach, locally known as Alugbati, is commonly grown as a backyard herb in South Asian home gardens. It is one of the versatile leafy vegetables appreciated by many for its jampacked nutritional profile. Its leaves, stems, and roots are an excellent source of phytonutrients and promote overall health.

With its antioxidant levels, Alugbati neutralizes free radical damage, therefore help prevent chronic diseases and slows the aging process. The plant is also a rich source of dietary fibers which normalize bowel movement and support colon health. Similarly, its B-complex vitamin content, folate, is beneficial for childbearing women. It nurtures the embryo, particularly its neural tube, promoting the proper growth of fetus during pregnancy. (Bureau of Plant Industry)
