Ground beef should be handled with particular care as it is more perishable than whole muscle cuts of meat. The presence of any bacteria on the surface during the grinding process will affect the quality of the product.
Since freezing ground beef at 0°F (-18°C) keeps it safe indefinitely, freezing time and packaging are recommended to keep its good quality. Storing it in the fridge for 1 to 2 days or in the freezer for 3 to 4 months are some options.
Meanwhile, here are some things to consider when shopping for ground beef:
• Fresh ground beef goes through a number of color changes during its shelf life. These color changes are normal, and the ground beef remains perfectly wholesome and safe to eat within 1-2 days of purchase from the market.
• Look for ground beef with bright red color. Ground beef can turn brown in the absence of oxygen. While this is not necessarily a sign of spoilage, extended exposure to air reduces the normal shelf life of the product.
