MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – Severe Tropical Storm Maring has left PHP263.7 million in damage to agriculture and fisheries in the province of Pangasinan.
In an interview on Tuesday, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) emergency operations center manager Shallom Balolong said the amount of damage was caused by severe flooding in many parts of the province.
“The affected crops were mostly palay (unhusked rice) with over 21,000 hectares of farmland submerged to flood waters during the onslaught of Maring. Damages to palay alone amounted to PHP110.9 million,” he said.
Damage to high-value crops amounted to PHP53.5 million, corn at PHP15.6 million, and fisheries at PHP83.7 million, he added.
Pangasinan provincial agriculturist Dalisay Moya said the affected farmers will be given planting materials from the national and provincial governments.
“The master listing is ongoing to identify the affected farmers,” she said.
Meanwhile, Balolong said livestock damage caused by Maring amounted to PHP1.9 million and PHP18.9 million in infrastructure.
“These include roads, buildings, and houses,” he said.
Maring left the province with six casualties last year, Balolong said. (PNA)
