#TECHNOTIPS: Defrosting of meat and poultry products | |
While meat producers take actions to assure safety of their products before it reaches your kitchen, it is likewise essential to maintain food safety all the way to the table. Practicing safe-handling methods at home can help keep you and your family safe.
During food preparation, frozen meat should not be defrosted at room temperature. Keeping the meat products cold during defrosting can prevent bacterial growth. Meanwhile, for defrosting meat in cold water, it is advised to make sure that the product is in an airtight container or a leak-proof bag before submerging in the water. Foods defrosted in the microwave or by the cold-water method should be cooked before re-freezing because they may have been held at temperatures higher than 40 F.
Moreover, washing of hands, counters, and cooking tools as well as using separate plates and utensils for cooked and raw foods are also practices that should be observed to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses. (meatsafety.org)
