A well-leveled field is a pre-requisite to good crop growth and management. One of the recommendations to achieve this is through maintaining the cleanliness and form of dikes and ditches.
Clean and compacted dikes help prevent or reduce pest infestation as well as prevent seepage. This, likewise, ensures water efficiency and facilitates drainage. In addition, keeping the forms of dikes at 15cm high and 20cm wide discourages rat-burrowing. (Pinoy Rice Knowledge Bank)
