James Maddison Out of England's World Cup Latest Squad Announcement

Despite being a top quality player, Leicester City star James Maddison has been a casualty of England's injury crisis. He is recovering from a knee injury and was forced to miss Leicester's last match, a 2-0 defeat to West Ham United. It is unclear whether he will be fit enough to play in England's opening game against Iran on Monday.

Despite being one of the most prolific attacking players in English football, Jadon Sancho has been plagued by injury. He has not played for Manchester United since October and his absence is a clear sign of the England squad's abundance of attacking talent.

On Wednesday, the Leicester playmaker took part in a light training session with the Three Lions, but it was not to be. The squad is currently in the Al Wakrah training ground in Qatar and a spokesman for the FA told talkSPORT that he was only doing light drills. The team was working under a 33C heat and the FA's lead men's physical performance coach Ben Rosenblatt led the early fitness drills.

James Maddison was pictured on his way into the dressing room from the training pitch, but it was not a full training session. Earlier in the day, the playmaker had been diagnosed with a knee injury and was advised by his medical team to avoid any further contact with the pitch.

While there was no mention of James Maddison in the latest World Cup squad announcement, he is expected to play in England's opener against Iran on Monday. The 26-man squad is set to feature the likes of Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney, and the former is expected to play a big part in the tournament.

Despite being a top class player, Leicester City star James Maddison is not expected to make the cut. He is recovering from a knee injury, and is being treated in Qatar's Al Wakrah training ground. He is a candidate for the first World Cup appearance of his career, but he is a long way off the pace of the team's frontline. Having just one England cap to his name, Maddison has been overlooked in previous purple patches at the Foxes. Having reportedly watched the Euro 2020 on TV last summer, it is understandable that Maddison would like to be involved in a big game. However, he will have to be patient. Having only played 36 minutes for England under Southgate, he is unlikely to feature in the World Cup opener against the USA on Thursday.

While it is no surprise to see the likes of Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney and Marcus Rashford named in the squad, there are some interesting names missing from the cut. Leicester's own Kyle Walker, who has undergone groin surgery and is recovering from an ankle injury, is expected to miss out on the World Cup, while the club's other big name, Reece James, is sidelined by a knee injury.

While James Maddison's absence may not be as significant as the other players in question, his injury is still a huge blow to England. The player has only played one England match in three years, and he was absent for England's qualification match against Czech Republic, where he picked up a knee injury and was forced to miss the second half. It is not clear whether or not he will be fit for the opener, but he is a candidate for the first World Cup game of his career.
