ALFALFA (MEDICAGO SATIVA)
by James M. Wong - Monday, 27 October 2008, 04:58 AM

LAST MONTH I FINISHED 2 COURSES: "ESTABLISHING FEED RESOURCES FOR YOUR GOAT" AND "BUILD ASSETS THROUGH GOATS". IN CONNECTION WITH THESE COURSES, I ASKED SOME FARMERS HERE AND LEARNED FROM THEM THAT THEY ARE FEEDING THEIR SHEEPS & GOATS WITH GRASS CALLED "ALFALFA". ONE FARMER GAVE ME A HANDFULL OF SEEDS WHICH HE SAID COULD SPREAD IN 2000 SQUARE METERS OF FARMLAND. I TRIED TO RESEARCH ACCORDING TO THE ARTICLE THE SEEDS OF ALFALFA CAN BE GROUND INTO FLOUR, PARCHED AND EATEN, OR OF COURSE USED AS "SPROUTS" AND VERY HIGH IN NUTRIENTS. THE LEAVES CAN BE EATEN RAW IN SALAD, BUT ARE BETTER DRIED AND GROUND TO OBTAIN MOST OF THE NUTRIENTS. THE WORD ALFALFA COMES FROM THE ARABIC WORD MEANING "FATHER OF ALL FOODS". IT IS HIGH IN VITAMINS A, B, E, K AND P. IT CONTAINS POTASSIUM, PHOSPHOROUS, IRON, CHLORINE, SODIUM, SILICA, MAGNESIUM AND MANY OTHER TRACE ELEMENTS BECAUSE OF ITS DEEP ROOTS AND PREFERENCE FOR FAIRLY RICH SOIL. IT HAS A FAIRLY HIGH PROTEIN CONTENT (18.9%) AND ALSO CONTAINS THE ANTIOXIDANT TRICIN. IT IS VERY GOOD TONIC, BOTH FOR GAINING HEALTH OR RETAINING IT. THE PLEASANT TEA MADE FROM THE LEAVES IS VERY REJUVENATING IF TAKEN EVERY DAY. ALFLAFA IS LISTED AS AN APPETIZER, DIURETIC, TONIC AND NUTRIENT.

THE TEA WILL IMPROVE APPETITE, RELIEVE URINARY AND BOWEL PROBLEMS, ELIMINATE RETAINED WATER AND EVEN HELP CURE PEPTIC ULCERS, IF TAKEN REGULARLY. ITS ACTION IS SLOW BUT WILL SOON PUT THE BODY IN BALANCE. IN EUROPE AND RUSSIA THE TEA HAS BEEN USED AS A DIETARY AID FOR CELIAC DISEASE (ALONG WITH PROPER DIET). ALFALFA IS BEING USED EXPERIMENTALLY AS AN ANTIFUNGAL AND ESTROGENIC AGENT.

ALFALFA, ESPECIALLY THE SEED OF ALFALFA CONCENTRATE, HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE VERY EFFECTIVE IN LOWERING HIGH CHOLESTEROL CONDITIONS, BY STOPPING EXCESSIVE PRODUCTION OF CHOLESTEROL IN THE BODY.

I WILL HAVE MY ANNUAL VACATION LEAVE BY NEXT MONTH, BY THEN I WILL TRY TO PLANT THESE ALFALFA SEEDS. IF YOU HAVE MORE INFORMATIONS ON HOW TO GROW IT BETTER, PLEASE SEND ME.

hi mr wong,

i referred your query to our forage experts and they said the best people to ask about the performance of alfalfa ---how to grow and manage and its survivavbility---are those from the temperate countries.  you can also join the egroup called "grazers edge" if you're interested and post your query there.

apparently alfalfa is a temperate forage species and will grow well and give optimum benefits in temperate areas, although it can also thrive in some tropical asian environment.  it is a "warm season crop" in temperate areas that grows best in dry and well-drained loam soils but can be grown on acidic soils with application of lime.

since your home province is pampanga, you may have problems growing alfalfa considering the constant typhoons in our country plus the fact that pampanga gets flooded every time there is continuous rain (even without typhoons).

so our suggestion is that you study your soil and environment well before you engage in alfalfa production...and be careful if you are bringing in the seeds to the philippines, especially if you are flying via singapore...they are very strict at the airport with quaratine requirements of plant and animal materials that may bring in pests.

HINDI LANG KAYO MATALINO, MAGANDA RIN KAYO! MABUHAY PO KAYO!

I THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR VERY ESSENTIAL INFORMATION CONCERNING THE ABOVE-MENTIONED SUBJECT.

ACTUALLY, THE LOCATION OF THE PROPOSED FARM IS IN BATIAWAN, SUBIC, ZAMBALES AND IT IS CONSIDERABLY ELEVATED AREA AS FAR AS FLOOD IS CONCERN. BUT CONSIDERING THE TYPE OF SOIL, IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT IT MUST BE CLASSIFIED FIRST TO ENSURE THAT THE ALFALFA WILL SURVIVE IN THIS AREA. SOIL SAMPLE MUST SUBMITTED TO LABORATORY FOR SOIL TESTING. I HOPE YOU WOULD NOT MIND SUGGETING HOW CAN I ACCOMPLISH THESE TASKS. DO YOU THINK THE REGIONAL OFFICE OF THE DEPARMENT OF AGRICULTURE IN PAMPANGA OR ZAMBALES COULD HELP ME?

ONE PURPOSE OF PLANTING THIS FORAGE IS TO ESTABLISH FEED RESOURCES FOR MY PROPOSED GOAT FARM.

I APPRECIATE VERY MUCH YOUR SUPPORT AND IMMEDIATE RESPONSE TO MY QUERY.

BEST REGARDS,

JAMES M. WONG

Mr. Wong

Good morning sir. I know that it has bee over 10 years since the inquiry but would like to know if you were able to plant the alfalfa. It is wildly used here in the US for all livestock. Is there a place there in the Philippines that are selling the seeds? I am going to start a goat farm and would like to use this hay as a source of food for them. Also, would like to inquire about your goat farm, type, breed and cost of one if you are selling?

Thank you
