DUMAGUETE CITY, Nov. 18 – Fish production in Negros Oriental is more than enough to feed the province’s over one million population.

This was disclosed by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) provincial officer Leonardo Aro in the wake of projections that fish sanctuaries will be affected by the rise in sea temperature.

He said the province has more than 210 fish cages operated by private individuals; some of them are in Bais and Siit bay in Siaton.

Inventories conducted by BFAR also showed more than 180 commercial fishing boats operating in the Southern part of Negros Oriental and in the Tanon Strait. However, some of them are operating illegally, reports said.

The provincial government is also propagating tilapia and bangus fingerlings in different Barangay Agricultural and Development Centers (BADCs) notwithstanding the fish coming from Mindanao.

Aro said BFAR has committed one million tilapia fingerlings every year to the province, bought from the central tilapia hatchery in Clarin, Bohol.

This is not to mention the presence of hundreds of marginal of fishermen living along the shorelines of the province, the BFAR official said. (PNA) LAP/jfp/Juancho Gallarde
