ILOILO CITY, Sept. 15 – Farmers in the province of Iloilo have now started to plant for the second cropping because of the substantial supply of water coming from the rain and the irrigation system, Iloilo provincial agriculture officer Dr. Ildefonso Toledo said.

Dr. Toledo said that the farmers planting for second cropping are in fact everywhere in the province now. “The stages of crops are varied so there are those who have harvested for first cropping earlier and are now planting for the second cropping,” the provincial agriculturist noted.

He said that as per their consolidated report for the first cropping as of the month of July yet, the farmers have a total harvested area of 2,410.06 hectares with a production of 8,803.81 metric tons. The average yield was placed at 3.65 metric tons per hectare.

Dr. Toledo said that despite of the rat attack on the rice crops for first cropping there had been so far no big affectation on the production and so he remains to be optimistic.

The provincial agriculturist is working on to reach what he calls the “elusive target of producing one million metric tons of palay by the year end”. [(PNA) LAP/AJPetinglay/vlo]
