ILOILO CITY, May 21 – Expanded Modified Rapid Composting (EMRC) production farms will be put up in the towns of Pototan and San Miguel soon.

EMRC, a national program, aims to increase the production, as well as the level of income of rice farmers through the judicious use of chemical fertilizers in combination with organic fertilizers and compost from farm wastes.

It utilizes residual NPK (Nitrogen-Phosphorous-Potassium) from decomposed rice straw through rapid composting combined with organic fertilizer produced through vermin composting on rice production farms.

The project will be jointly handled by the Department of Agriculture–Regional Field Unit (DA-RFU) 6, Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM), and the Iloilo Provincial Government.

The P646,000 funding for the project will be provided by the DA-RFU 6 while BSWM will provide technical support.

The provincial government, on the other hand, will identify the areas in Pototan and San Miguel where the EMRC farms will be established.

Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. said that aside from promoting sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture, the EMRC project is also expected to increase the income of farmers and to alleviate community awareness and interest on appropriate and sustainable farm-based livelihoods.
