ILOILO CITY, June 6 –- The Department of Agriculture (DA) has already distributed about 4,000 bags of registered seeds to growers in Western Visayas.

DA Regional Director Larry Nacionales said that they are distributing the registered seeds to growers as support to the community seed banks that they are establishing.

The DA used to distribute certified seeds just before the planting season to farmers under the 50:50 scheme for which farmers only have to pay half of the P1,200 price of a bag of palay seeds.

The national government used to pay the other half but now, the process has been scrapped in lieu of the community seed banks.

The community seed banks are intended for farmers to produce their own seeds for planting, with the registered seeds being distributed by DA to serve as their starter seeds during planting time.

Nacionales said that for every seed grower who is registered in the master list, they are given 20 kilos of registered seeds.

“Iloilo province got almost half of the 4,000 bags of registered seeds that we distributed,” the DA official said, even as she added that they have requested additional bags of registered seeds from their central office since the 4,000 bags initially allotted to the region is not enough.

Nacionales said that he expects farmers in the region to have fully planted their irrigated rice paddies by June or July for first cropping. (PNA) dct/LOR/AJP/vlo
