MANILA, Feb. 7 — Honey production in La Union is expected to have a rapid growth after benefiting from Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) shared service facility (SSF) program.

DTI granted La Union Beekeepers Development Cooperative (LUBDCO) facilities for creating hives, boxes and frames which benefited 60 members of the cooperative.

The SSF program aims to empower local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by giving them advance facilities that will help them grow their businesses.

It also targets to improve the quality and quantity of MSMEs’ production and help them to be more competitive both in the local and offshore market.

Aside from LUBDCO, honey farmers of Bagulin, Balaoan, Bauang, Burgos, San Fernando City and Sudipen will also be benefiting on this beekeeping project through training from National Apiculture Research Training and Development Institute (NARTDI) of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU).

”This is to ensure adequate supply of raw honey that will be processed into various products at the Honeybee Center in Raois, Bacnotan, La Union… The sustained production of honey will provide the farmer-beneficiaries a regular source of additional income thus helping them improve their quality of life,” DTI said in a statement.

”This will make honey production fullblast in La Union because more farmers will be involved in beekeeping. These farmers will have an easy time propagating their bee colonies due to the availability of needed equipment to construct and maintain their hives, boxes and frames. This translates to more honey produce and more money earned out of them,” it added.

The budget given to LUBDCO was part of the P700-million allocation of DTI for SSF program in 2013.
The department also plan to allot the same amount of budget for SSF program this year. [(PNA) lgi/KMC/JLD (OJT)]
