To improve the economic conditions of the farmers and fisherfolks in the 3rd district of Quezon, the Department of Agriculture (DA) recently inaugurated a P20-million public market and trading post in Macalelon as part of the government’s commitment  to uplift the quality of life of the farmers and fisherfolks.

The project is the national and local governments’ response to the marketing needs of the farmers by eliminating the layers of middlemen both in buying and selling of their agriculture products.

To further develop the economy of the province, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala urged the local government officials to tap the assistance of the Philippine Rural Development Program (PRDP) for additional livelihood projects, farm to market roads and trainings for the farmers and fisherfolks.

He also added that the DA will continue to provide assistance to the people of Macalelon.

Mayor Nelson Traje said the Macalelon public market is an example of public funds well spent by the government.   The LGU provided P5-million as counterpart funding for the project.

The public market and trading post is a three-story dry market, located beside the existing wet market. The market has spacious stalls, and an open air design, which lessens the need of electricity. It also includes vegetable stands, fully tiled flooring, stalls for general merchandise, and other facilities. From the Department of Agriculture
