ILOILO CITY, April 12 – The Department of Agriculture–Regional Field Unit 6 (DA-RFU 6) opened its research center to about 1,200 student-members of the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs (PSYC) Inc. as a way to raise their awareness on the significance of agriculture especially on the government’s thrust on food security.

DA regional technical director Joyce Wendam said that the DA has been trying to reach out to students to likewise encourage them to take up agriculture to beef up their technicians, whose number is declining.

“It’s really the concern of the DA to create awareness to create awareness among the minds of these students that they will be the future agricultural workers of our country,” she said.

The visiting students from 71 schools nationwide were exposed to the DA’s organic fertilizer production, laboratories under the Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC), bio-control laboratory and national seed testing quality control laboratory, palayamanan model and other projects relevant to science and technology.

These projects are situated at the Western Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center (WESVIARC).

Meantime, Roger Junior C. Colobong, the president of the national executive council of the organization, said that the site visit on Sunday was part of the activities lined up for the 2011 National Youth Science, Technology, Environment Summer Camp, which is a trademark activity of the PSYSC.

The annual activity was aimed at promoting science among students not just in the form of lectures but interactive workshops, socialization activities and field trips to see the application of science concepts in projects.

“This year, our focus is on chemistry so we want to see the chemical processes and importance of chemistry on agriculture and how it helps in environmental issues,” he said.

He also said that hopefully the trip to DA-WESVIARC would “tickle their curiosity” and gave the students idea to take up agriculture courses.
