mb.com.ph | January 10, 2015 A series of informative lectures will be held during the 11-day HortiKultura Extravaganza that will run from January 23 to February 2 at the Tropical Garden at the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City. The lectures are in line with the garden show’s theme of “Yaman sa Paghahalaman” or Wealth in Growing Plants. The garden show is a collaboration of the Philippine Horticultural Society headed by Dorie S. Bernabe and the Quezon City government. It is a highlight of the city’s observance of its 75th founding anniversary. In the morning of Saturday, January 24, Lino Rom will discuss the health benefits of Sansevierias for indoors. This is a group of hardy plants that has been proven to be effective in absorbing pollution. There are many varieties of Sansevieria that come in various sizes, shapes, colors and leaf patterns. They can last for months as indoor plants without much care. In the afternoon of January 24, Zac B. Sarian will talk on exotic fruit trees that can be grown in the ground as well as in rubberized containers. The fruit trees in containers will bear full-sized fruits for as long as they are given the right growing medium, the right light requirements and fertilizers. Fruit trees in containers are perfect for urban dwellers who usually have limited space in their gardens. As a source of income, fruiting exotic fruit trees in containers command a high price, especially if they are superior varieties. There are many fruit trees that can be grown in containers, including pummelos, chico, makopa, lemons and limes, guava and many more. On Sunday, January 25, Louie Tabing and his Pangkat Kaunlaran will conduct a forum in the morning. In the afternoon there will be a lecture on Ashitaba, a plant valued for its many health attributes. In the afternoon of Monday, the PHS Study group will conduct a workshop on propagating native ferns by means of spores. In the morning of Tuesday, January 27, Jimmy Floro will discuss landscaping techniques. If one is adept at landscaping, he or she can make a good income. There are big projects offered by property developers and good landscapers are also in demand by home owners. In the afternoon, Neil ‘Boyet’ Ganigan will discuss trends in ornamentals. He and his partner, Jay Silvestre, are producing hybrids of hibiscus, sansevierias and other high-value ornamental plants. Fernando Aurigue will lecture on the research advances in Philippine Hoyas in the morning of January 28, Wednesday. In the afternoon, the PHSI Study group will conduct a workshop on setting up a hoya sanctuary. In the morning of January 29, Thursday, Ken Woods of Toro Company from Australia will discuss the history and innovation in horticulture and agricultural irrigation. In the afternoon, there will be a lecture on Medinillas of which there are a number of indigenous species. On January 30, Friday, Food Forests will be discussed by Moje Ramos-Aquino while Louie Tabing will talk on virgin coconut oil production in the afternoon. On January 31, Rey Pimentel who pioneered in breeding hibiscus at UP Los Baños will talk on basic plant breeding methods for the home gardener in the morning. In the afternoon, there will be a workshop on flower arranging trends. On February 1, Serapion S. Metilla will lecture on how one can set up his or her own flower shop.
